Most sore throats are caused by viruses and clear on their own within 7 days. Antibiotics don't help viral sore throats — here's what actually does.

Remedies That Work

Warm salt water gargle

Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle for 30–60 seconds, spit out. Repeat every 2–3 hours.

The salt draws fluid out of swollen throat tissue, reducing swelling and pain. It also creates a hostile environment for bacteria and washes away irritants. One of the most effective and evidence-backed home remedies.

Pain relievers

Ibuprofen (Advil, Nurofen) is more effective than paracetamol/acetaminophen for sore throats — it reduces both pain and inflammation. Take with food.

Throat lozenges or sprays

Throat lozenges containing benzocaine or lidocaine numb the throat directly. Menthol lozenges stimulate cold receptors and provide temporary relief. Both are effective for short-term pain management.

Honey

A teaspoon of honey in warm water or tea soothes throat tissue and has mild antimicrobial properties. Research shows it's as effective as some cough suppressants. Safe for adults and children over 1 year (not for babies under 12 months due to botulism risk).

Cold foods

Ice cream, cold water, and ice chips soothe inflamed tissue through the cold effect. This is temporary but genuinely effective.

Steam and humidity

Breathing steam from a hot shower or bowl of hot water, or using a humidifier in your room, keeps the throat moist and reduces irritation.

Stay hydrated

Warm drinks like herbal tea (with honey), warm water, and broths are soothing and prevent the throat from drying out. Cold water works too — use whichever feels better.

What Doesn't Help

  • Antibiotics for viral sore throats — most sore throats are viral; antibiotics have no effect on viruses and cause side effects
  • Vitamin C — no strong evidence it shortens viral illness once symptoms have started
  • Most herbal teas — soothing due to warmth and hydration, not specific compounds

How to Tell If You Need Antibiotics

About 10–15% of adult sore throats are caused by Streptococcus bacteria (strep throat), which does require antibiotics.

Signs that suggest strep rather than viral:

  • Severe sore throat that came on suddenly
  • White patches or pus on the tonsils
  • Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
  • Fever (over 38°C / 100.4°F)
  • No runny nose, cough, or hoarseness (these suggest viral)

A rapid strep test (swab) at a doctor's office or pharmacy can confirm in minutes. If positive, antibiotics shorten illness and prevent rare complications like rheumatic fever.

When to See a Doctor

  • Sore throat is severe and not improving after 7 days
  • You have difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Sore throat with high fever and no other cold symptoms
  • You have a rash (could indicate scarlet fever)
  • Drooling or inability to open your mouth fully (signs of abscess)
  • You're immunocompromised
